Critical essay

the historical significance of this novel is a brilliant one explaining the war and how it affected the character "Henry" in the story. i do think that this book is worthy to study in a literatue class room because it talkes so much about real life experiences of the war and how it effects you especially when dealing with injury because of the war. many critics comments that i have read concerning " A farewell to arms" have been very positive because of the fact that the Author didnt specifically write the book about his life but based upon it. in the Authors life it was in most cases depressing mostly because of the fact that the country was going through the great depression and that is what kind of led to the reason of killing himself.
The book would be a very great book for a literature class becuse of the fact that it has to do with two couples not really into a relationship at first but finally gets serious as they escape Itally together and heads to switzerland not wanting any officials to capture him and send him back to the front. the novel offers powerful descriptions of life during world war I and immediately following world war I.
because of the fact that hemingways novel "A farewell to arms won many numerous awards for his style of writing and the details that allows you to picture just what the Author is saying in the story. the Authors allows the reader to think when reading this novel becuse when henry and catherine get ready to have sex she dosent say what exactly what it is they're about to do the author uses the phrse "lets go to bed " and you kinda get the objective from their instead of using big bold terms when henry and catherine make love to one another.
the critics that i have read concerning their response of this book have said nothing negative which i thinks accounts for the author not really telling his own life story but parts of his life to base the stort upon. the Author ha dput alot of time and effort into making this novel an enjoyable one relating love and war togetherto make a grand novel for anyone and all literature classes to read.

Biography on Ernest Hemingway

Early in 1918 Ernest Hemingway joined the italian red cross and served as an ambulance driver in Italy during world world war I, in which the Italians allied with the british, french, and americans against germany and Austria- hungary. while serving in the war hemingway had two life changing experiences take place that would later inspire and cause him the write a novel "A farewell to arms" that would soon become a somewhat Autobiography of his life but not in full detail.

The first life changing experience that occured in Hemingways life occured on july 8, 1918 when a trench motor shell struck while he was crouched down trying to dodge bullets and bombs while recovering from his wounds of getting blasted met at a women at teh ed cross hospital whom he fell in love with. many people have doubt that that his relationship with her informed them of the relationship between lieutenant henry and catherine barkley in a "farewell to arms". hemingway and his wife Agnes von Kurowsky didnt have a very good relationship because of the fact that he wasn't faithful to his one spouse.

Hemingway lived a private and whoreish life. in september 1921, he married his first of four wives whom he had as he traveled from place to place seeing he world and partying, drinking and meeting new women and people.

Hemingway spent several years as a reporter during which time he developed a clear, concise, and emotionally evocative writing style that generations of authors would soon take after hemingways death. hemingway made valuable connections with American expatriate writers that has helped him develope a reputation of writing ome of the best novels of all time.

Novel Response #3

"A Farewell To Arms" is a very intrigueing story that has to be read with understanding of what point the Author is trying to get across. in book three of the story henry and catherine have went back to switzerland to escape the italians that are trying to make him go back to the front and fight which he does not want to do because of the dander and the chance of getting killed. hery and catherine's love for each other grows into something more serios than what it has been since they first met. when catherine and henry first met she didnt want the relationship to get serious because she was stil grieving at the loss of her fiance whom she loved very dearly.

Catherine was a very sensitive girl that expresses her feelings to henry in some occasions when their about to make love to each other. catherine says that she feels like a whore becuase their not married and are into a relationship. I think while growing up catherine was taught by her parents that you should get married before you have sex, or abstinence is the best policy because of the way she felt.

many of the Authors details ans descriptions that he uses are symbols of meaning in the story. while reading book three in the novel "A farewell to Arms" rain serves as a symbol of the inevitable disintegration of happiness in life. catherine, Ms. barkley says that the rain has a tendency of ruining things for lovers at the ending of the story while it's raining Catherine gives birth to a still born baby , this is very sad for henry because he really wanted a child. after Catherine takes her last breath the author describes henry as as he gets up and walk home in the rain. The Author has it raining while this tragedyis taking place because the rain that is falling is a symbol of his style of writing and making it as trategic as he can.

in the ending of the story it gets very sad just like the Authors life did when he was living. at the end of the story catherine gets very sick because of her pregnancy. whhile giving labour henry is excited but gets the news that catherine gave birth to a still born child and not long after that catherine dies. I think it's very sad how al of this has happened to a couple that really loved each other and was excited that they were truly about to start a family but then all of a sudden henry is left to himself just like at the beginning of the story when he was single and didn't have a companion like Catherine.

Novel Response # 2

I am midway through the book "A Farewell to Arms" and it has gotten very interesting. when i first started reading the novel i really couldn't understand what was really going on because the author's writings are in a way that are different from other styles of writngs that many Authors have. Henry the main character in the story and Catherine dont speak proper i think the author writes the way catherine speaks because many females speak that way because of lack of knowldge or education or maybe it's just the way hemingway is trying to portray her in a sense of a making her sound very beautiful

In the passage a good example of the way catherine speaks is when she 's taking care of henry after being injured in the blast while on the front. she says to henry"you smart" instaed of you're or you are smart. her talking with grammatical errors lets me know that catherine is speaking in the story because the Author does not let the reader know who's speaking but you acn get an idea of who is by the way the Author distinguishes the characters words from each other to let you know who is speaking in the story.

Midway through chapter 11 henry has gotten injured from a blast that has killed two friends of his and almost killed himhe goes to the hospital to get treatment for his leg that was paralyzed in the blast. at the Hospital catherine is his nurse and takes care of him. Henry and Catherine finnally get more into love with each other because of the fact that they're seeing alot of each other.

NOVEL PROJECT RESPONSE # 1

While reading “A farewell to arms “ I am very pleased with what I have read so far I have just read chapters one thru eight and am very surprised at how the author put this piece of literature together he describes italy and switzwerland as if he's there in the setting. The Author describes every bit of detail the weather, the land and the environment that he's visioning and writing about.
So far in the story the narrator, lieutenant Henry describes the small Italian village in which he lives. In the first eight chapters of the book, it is at the start of winter and a cholera epidemic has killed the army of about seven thousand soldiers; which began in the summer of world war I. the main character
Henry moves to Gorizia until he thinks that the fighting has calmed down a little bit. When Henry returns he speaks with his roommate Rinaldi. Rinaldi tells him about a girl that he has met at an hospital who was a nurse named Catherine Barkley. In these these first chapters that I’ve read the author has such an interesting way of writing and adding war and love together by relating it to how it really is in real life.
In chapters four and five Henry tries to get acquainted with the nurse ms. Barkley by going to visit her at the hospital. when henry tell Catherine that he loves her she tells him not to say that because she dosent really want to love anyone because she once loved her fiance and all of a sudden he died

Mentor log #1

March 24, 2008

2:30 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.

On Monday march the 24th I met with my mentor Sam who is a art student at the university of Georgia . While meeting with him we went over my senior project research project together to make sure that it was mistake free and didn’t have any errors. I made a lot of changes to my rough draft to make it into my final paper. Am has really helped me in finding information to better help me understand what art really is what I need to really know about the topic I’m studying in the form of cubism and optical art. My mentor sam explained to me what exactly how the shades of light and dark colors form to make an image of 3-d in the form of optical art. I really enjoyed my time with my mentor learning more about my topic and what I want to do as a product for my senior project.
While figuring out what I wanted to do for my product, my mentor had me drawing object that we could possibly draw and make into my product. I don’t know exactly what I want to do just yet for my product but my mentor is helping me to decide and hopefully I will get something started
